Description
Curved Reclining Form (Rosewall) is a sculpture created by Dame Barbara Hepworth between 1960 and 1962. It is carved from Nebrasina stone, a hard limestone, and stands on a rectangular plinth set in a shallow tiled rectangular-plan pool, both of which were constructed in 2009 and are not included in the listing.
The sculpture was acquired by the Ministry of Public Building and Works in 1963 for use in decentralised postal service offices in Chesterfield, Derbyshire. Originally, it was displayed on a stepped plinth in a rectangular pool in the piazza north of Chetwynd House, which was demolished in 1999. The abstract form consists of two interlocking curved shapes with twin oval apertures. The front elevation, facing east, is sharply carved, while the rear elevation, facing west, is shaped but lacks detailed carving. The dimensions of the sculpture are 900mm in height, 2300mm in width, and 600mm in depth.
Currently, Rosewall is located on the west side of Future Walk, a public walking route established around 2000 that connects Queen’s Park to the south, which is registered at Grade II, with the civic centre to the north, featuring Chesterfield Courthouse, a war memorial, and Chesterfield Town Hall, all listed at Grade II. The sculpture is positioned in the south-west corner of the pool, approximately 45 meters south-west of the original pool site and about 15 meters south of Chesterfield General Post Office.
