Description
The War Memorial and Steps in front of Chesterfield Town Hall were built between 1933 and 1938, designed by AJ Hope of Bradshaw Gass and Hope, with the war memorial added in 1954. Constructed from Portland stone, the steps lead up to a semi-circular terrace that features a balustrade. This terrace includes a raised platform at the back, which has a semi-circular wall that is partly rusticated and topped with console brackets and a shallow pediment. On either side of the steps, which rise in two short flights to road level, there are balustrades that extend to the left and right, ending in piers that support oval stone planting urns.
At the center of the top balustrade is a chest tomb war memorial, elevated on a single step, with bronze torches on either side of the rear wall, which is flanked by stepped piers and topped with a pediment. The balustrades on either side are also finished with oval stone planting urns. This structure was designed to enhance the formal approach to the new Town Hall, and the war memorial was unveiled by the Duke of Devonshire on May 8, 1954.
