Description

Chesterfield Saint Helena School, built in 1911, was designed by architect George H Widdows and showcases Baroque and Jacobean influences. The building is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and features a tiled roof. Its layout resembles a St Andrews Cross, with north-south wings at the center and along the road facade. The road-facing section is 2½ storeys high and has three gables.

At the center, there is a canted stone porch supported by short piers on a low wall. Above the porch, a canted stone bay features a parapet and leaded windows with mullions and a transom. The outer bays are two storeys tall and recessed, with round windows at ground level and a shaped stone-coped parapet. Similar walls connect this central block to the ends of two western radial blocks, which include four round windows.

At the outer ends of the wings, there are entrance doors with arched doorways, blank roundels above, and doorcases flanked by swags. The center wing is topped with a cupola, while the radial wings have hipped roofs with double modillion eaves cornices. The building generally has four windows, including a two-storey brick bay with a dormer above. The sashes consist of one, two, and three lights, with gauged red brick arches featuring stone keys. This design is both unusual and successful.
