Description
The Gothic Temple is a folly that has been converted into a house, built around 1758-1759, likely designed by Robert Adam. It is constructed from red brick faced with sandstone ashlar, and features a roof that is concealed behind parapets. The building is single storey and exhibits Gothic architectural style with decorative details from the Decorated period.
The west elevation consists of three bays, which are separated by triple-shafted columns that have shaft rings and stiff leaf capitals. Each bay contains a three-light pointed window that features surprisingly accurate reticulated tracery and crocketed ogee hoodmoulds. Above each window, there is a trefoiled super arch with upright leaf responds, and the spandrels contain blank shields positioned below the sills. A moulded cornice and parapet sit above, adorned with blind triangular-headed motifs. The central bay is topped with a taller parapet that includes a blind cross arrow slit, flanked by pierced quatrefoils, and features a lozenge frieze above, along with four crocketed pinnacles.
The narrow north and south elevations mirror the design of the west elevation, with similar parapets and a central bay flanked by narrow blind bays. To the west, there is a lower block. Inside, the temple boasts stucco work by Vassali.
