Description

The Bridge and Cascade is a Grade I listed structure located in Kedleston Park, designed by Robert Adam. Originally conceived in 1761 with a single arch, it was redesigned in 1764 to feature three arches, and the construction was completed between 1770 and 1771. The bridge is made of ashlar and has three round-arched spans, each with moulded hoodmoulds. The spandrels contain fluted roundels, and there are projecting piers with apsed niches and a moulded sill band. The tops of the piers are adorned with swags, and the bridge features a fluted frieze and a dentil cornice. The balustraded parapet consists of cast iron balusters, divided into three units for each span. The road approaches are steep, with the end walls curving outwards and downwards. There are end piers, and to the east, there is a rubblestone cascade.
