Description
The remains of Codnor Castle are a fortified manor dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, with later alterations. The structure is made of ashlar and coursed squared sandstone. Standing eighteen feet high, the remains include a former rectangular three-storey tower to the north, which is connected by a wall to a later outer court to the south. The tower features remnants of a large external stack on the north wall and small square openings on the west wall. The outer court is enclosed by walls on three sides and has a central ashlar polygonal tower with cross slit windows on two sides and a small cusped ogee window on the left side. The west wall contains a four-centred arched fireplace at the center, with a quoined doorcase to the left. The opposite wall has no openings. The castle was built by the Grey family of Codnor and was taken over by the Zouch family in 1496. It is designated as a Scheduled Ancient Monument and was in a ruinous state at the time of the last survey.
