Description

The Village Cross, located to the northeast of the Jovial Dutchman Public House, dates from 1871 but is believed to be situated on the site of an earlier market cross, with the steps from that earlier cross still visible. It features a tapering stone shaft that rests on a large square base, which is placed upon a plinth made up of three earlier steps set into sloping ground. The cross has a wheel cross head adorned with foliage decoration on the west face, and a carved figure on the east face. This carving is thought to reflect Pre-Raphaelite influence.
