Description
The lock on the Cromford Canal, located at SK442 515, dates from around 1793 and has undergone alterations in the late 20th and early 21st centuries. It was engineered by William Jessop and Benjamin Outram and is constructed from coursed squared sandstone with moulded dressings and copings. The lock features a narrow chamber that runs from the north-west to the south-east, with indented housings for lock gates at both ends, although these gates have now been removed. Adjacent to the lock is a narrow dry dock channel, which used to be accessible from the north-west end and runs parallel to the lock chamber. This lock is part of a short flight of three locks on the Jacksdale section of the Cromford Canal and is one of the few surviving locks on its eastern end. It forms a group with the nearby lock at SK440 517 and the lock at SK443 506.
