Description
The House of Confinement is a parish lock-up built in the mid-18th century. It is constructed from ashlar stone and features a shallow pitched roof made of large stone slabs, topped with a stone slab ridge stack. The building is single storey and consists of two bays. The gabled street elevation has a central semicircular headed doorcase with a wide raised surround, a raised keystone, and a studded wooden door. Above the doorcase is a raised plaque inscribed with the words 'House of Confinement'. On either side of the door, there are circular openings with raised plain surrounds. Inside, the layout includes a central corridor with cells on either side. This building is an unusually large example of a village lock-up.
