Description
The Canal Inn is a public house built in the early 19th century. It features rendered stone with painted ashlar dressings, raised quoins, and a plinth. The roof is pyramidal and covered with plain tiles, with brick stacks on the side walls. The building has three storeys and two bays. There are three steps leading up to a central plain doorcase that has a bracketed stone hood and a half-glazed door from the 19th century. On either side of the door, there are 16-pane sash windows set in plain raised surrounds. Above, there are two similar sash windows and two 20th-century casement windows in similar surrounds. The east wall has a partly blocked two-light flush mullion staircase window. The Canal Inn was likely built to serve the nearby Cromford Canal, which was established in 1792.
