Description

This is a railway bridge over the River Amber, built between 1838 and 1840 by George Stephenson. It is constructed from rock-faced ashlar stone with tooled ashlar dressings. The bridge features a single segmental arch, which is supported by radiating voussoirs on plain impost bands and tapering jambs. The arch is lined with red brick, and there is a moulded cornice above it, along with a blocking course. This bridge is part of the North Midland Railway, which was opened in 1840.
