Description

The road bridge over the railway by Duffield Church was built between 1838 and 1842 by George Stephenson. It carries the road over the railway and is constructed of red brick faced with sandstone ashlar and rock-faced sandstone. The bridge features five elliptical arches supported by rock-faced piers, which have a stone impost band and evenly radiating voussoirs. The spandrels are also rock-faced, and there is a heavy roll moulded band at the base of the coped parapet, along with end piers. This bridge is part of the main Midland Railway Line and is depicted on the first edition of the Ordnance Survey map published in 1839.
