Description
The Duffield War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with later additions for the Second World War. It is made of Derbyshire gritstone and is situated near St Alkmund's Church on Church Drive in Duffield, Derbyshire.
The memorial features a Latin cross made of Derbyshire gritstone, which stands on a square plinth that is set on a three-stepped base. Surrounding the middle step is a low metal railing. The plinth has incised lettering painted black, commemorating those who died in both World Wars.
On the front face of the plinth, the inscription reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF/ THIS PARISH WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES IN THE/ 1914 – 18 AND 1939 – 45 WARS." Below this, on the top step, is a relief-carved inscription that states: "THE GLORY DIES NOT." The other faces of the plinth list the names of the fallen, each preceded by either "ROLL OF HONOUR 1914 – 1918 WAR" or "ROLL OF HONOUR 1939 – 1945 WAR."
