Description

Babington Farmhouse is a farmhouse from the mid-18th century that incorporates parts of an earlier structure. It is built from coursed rubble sandstone and features plain gables, quoins at the north-west end, and ashlar stacks with moulded caps at the intermediate and south-east gables. The roof is plain tiled. The building has two storeys and four bays, with generally 2-light flush mullioned windows that have glazing bar casements.

There are three doors: the main entrance is centrally located, featuring substantial jambs and lintels beneath a semi-circular shallow hood, and has a four-panelled door with the upper panels glazed. A doorway at the north-west end has a quoined surround and a plain planked door, while the doorway at the south-east end is made from earlier windows and has a plain plank door. There is an enlarged ground floor window between the doorways at the south-east end, which has a renewed surround and glazing bar casements. The first floor at the south-east end has a plain single light opening, with a similar adjacent opening that is blocked.

The rear elevation includes a low stone slated offshut with an unglazed window that has saddle bars and a flush surround. The principal elevation shows signs of localised rebuilding, and the south-east gable has blocked door and window openings, along with remnants of former walls. This farmhouse may have originally been part of structures associated with the now-demolished manor of the Babington family, which used to be located nearby.
