Description
The gatehouse to Mackworth Castle, likely a fortified manor house, dates from around 1495 to 1500. It is constructed of sandstone ashlar, with some repairs and additions in red brick. Only the front and side walls remain standing. The structure has two storeys, featuring a chamfered plinth, a battlemented parapet, and a moulded stringcourse.
The south elevation consists of three bays, with a central gateway that has a four-centred arch and a depressed crocketed ogee hoodmould. There are full-height buttresses on either side, each with two set-offs. Above the gateway, three windows are set under flat arches and retain remnants of cusped tracery, indicating they were originally 2-light windows with a transom. The stringcourse is adorned with gargoyles, and there are corbelled out circular angle turrets. A polygonal chimney stack is also present.
The rear elevation shows brick repairs, along with the remains of a fireplace and a spiral stair, as well as later brick lean-to sheds. This gatehouse is also scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
