Description

Kilburn Hall is a house, now used as offices, dating to the 17th century, with significant additions in 1712, and alterations and extensions in the early 19th century, 1883, and the early 20th century. The 1712 part is constructed of red brick with sandstone dressings, featuring rusticated stone quoins, a sandstone plinth, and horizontal bands on the first and second floors. The earlier 17th-century portion is of coursed squared sandstone with flush quoins and sandstone dressings. Later additions and alterations from 1883 and the early 20th century utilize similar materials, with some parts rendered. The building has steeply pitched plain tile roofs with moulded stone coping to the gables, incorporating eaves and ridge ball finials, as well as brick ridge and side wall stacks.

The main facade is gabled, with a three-bay arrangement; the central bay is recessed, with the northern bay representing the 17th-century structure and the two southern bays dating to 1712. The central bay features an early 19th-century Tuscan porch set over a segmental-headed doorcase of similar date, with 20th-century glazed doors. Tall glazing bar sashes are positioned on either side of the porch, set beneath wedge lintels, and flanked by single canted bay windows with tall plain sashes in moulded surrounds within the advanced bays. Above the porch is a centrally positioned, moulded 18th-century aedicule containing a plain sash window, flanked by matching sashes under wedge lintels with double keystones. Additional glazing bar sashes are found under similar lintels in the southern bay, while a two-light late 19th-century window with plain sashes is present in the northern bay. The upper portions of the gables each contain a glazing bar sash under a wedge lintel with double keystones, accompanied by a plain band above. The north facade incorporates two recessed and chamfered mullion windows with three lights, one above the other, on the east side; the remainder of the facade was remodeled in 1883 and the early 20th century. The south facade presents a large early 20th-century two-story bay window projecting from the 18th-century structure to the east, and a large early 20th-century extension to the west, featuring a ground-floor verandah. A visible section of the original 18th-century gable remains above the bay window, displaying a glazing bar sash under a double-keystoned lintel with a plain band above, and a stone plaque inscribed "HWE 1712." The original early 18th-century doorcase, with its segmental pediment, pulvinated frieze, and bolection moulded jambs, has been re-set on the west facade.

The interior was extensively remodeled in the 1880s and early 20th century. The southern front room contains an Adam-style fireplace. The attics retain a few original 18th-century panelled doors.
