Description

The ice house, located about 200 metres north of the Church of St Mary, dates from the late 18th century or early 19th century. It features buff-coloured brick side walls that have a noticeable convex batter, topped with a red brick semi-spherical dome. The structure appears to be built with cavity wall construction and is covered with approximately 9 inches of clay and 3 feet of earth, with turf on top. It has a circular plan and includes a brick segmental tunnel vault leading to the entrance on the north side. The ice house is about 20 feet in diameter and was originally built to serve Edith Weston Hall, which has since been demolished.
