Description
The Lime Kiln, dating from the late 18th century or early 19th century, is constructed from limestone rubble and is circular in shape. It is built into a bank inside a quarry and features a semi-circular opening at the front, which is corbelled up to a large timber lintel. There is a stoking hole located at the back of this opening.
Historically, the poet John Clare is said to have worked as a limeburner at this site in 1817. He earned 9 shillings a week and managed to save enough money to purchase a book for writing his poems, although he was eventually dismissed by his employer for spending time "scribbling."
