Description
The Church of St Wilfrid, located in the grounds of Holywell Hall, is a former church that is now closed. It dates from around 1700 and features some 19th-century alterations, incorporating materials from the 12th and 14th centuries. The building is constructed of coursed squared limestone rubble with ashlar dressings and rusticated quoins, topped with a slate roof.
The church comprises a nave, a west tower, and a vestry. The two-stage west tower is adorned with a quatrefoil parapet frieze and angle urns. It features a re-used 14th-century west door with triple shafted reveals, foliate capitals, and a double chamfered arch. Above the door is a panel displaying 18th-century royal arms, and in the top stage of the tower, there are keyed oculi with wooden Chinese Chippendale tracery on all four sides. The side walls contain four two-light windows with cusped heads and trefoil spandrels. On the north side, there is a gabled vestry with a single lancet window. The east end features a re-used 14th-century reticulated three-light window with a hood and human head stops.
Inside, the west end has four 12th-century round pillars that support the tower, featuring waterleaf and chamfered capitals, which now support double chamfered pointed arches. In the sanctuary, a doorway in the north wall leads to the vestry. All interior fittings are from the 19th century, including those with crocketed pinnacles and shafts. There is also a 19th-century square font with a contemporary wooden cover and a shafted base.
