Description
27 High Street East is a house that likely has medieval origins but was largely rebuilt in the early 17th century. It is constructed of ashlar stone with plain concrete tiles on the front slope of the roof and Collyweston stone slates on the rear. The building features a coped west gable on a decorative kneeler, with ridge and west end stacks that have brick shafts on stone bases. It is designed in an L-shape, with two storeys and an attic, and has a three-window range.
There are two 2-storey mullioned bay windows that are canted at ground floor level but become rectangular at the first floor. These flank an early 20th-century entrance with a Tudor arch. To the right, there is a round-headed entrance that was originally to a cross passage, featuring impost blocks, a keystone, and a cornice above. Above this entrance is a 3-light ovolo-moulded stone-mullioned window. The roof includes a hipped dormer window and two 20th-century skylights that replaced dormers. Additionally, there is a stair turret at the angle of the main block and the rear wing. It is likely that the building originally extended further to the east.
