Description

M and M Collins is a pair of houses located at No 39 and No 41 on the north side of Uppingham High Street East. These buildings date from the 18th century and were altered and extended around 1800. They are constructed of coursed rubble and squared stone, topped with a Collyweston stone slate roof and featuring a brick ridge stack.

No 39 is 1½ storeys tall and includes a late 19th-century shop window with a passageway to the left. There is a 20th-century door set at an angle, and two hipped dormers with glazing bars that break through the eaves. No 41 stands two storeys high and features a 19th-century bay window to the left and a part-glazed door to the right, which is set beneath a timber lintel. An extension to the north, built around 1800, is made of brick with ironstone rubble in the rear wall and has a 20th-century concrete tile roof, a coped north gable, and a north end stack. This extension is double-fronted with two storeys and an attic that is now blind. The ground floor has 8/8 sash windows flanking a panelled door, while the first floor has 6/6 sash windows. The attic windows have been blocked to create blind panels.

Inside, the buildings retain original features such as contemporary panelling, cupboards, a staircase, and enriched architraves. The first-floor front room has a coved ceiling.
