Description

City Yard House is a large house, primarily from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the later 17th century. A date stone from 1622 is built into a newer wall, and another date stone from 1694 is located at the back of the house. The two stones are connected by the initials WSB and WB on the earlier stone, and WB on the later one. The building is constructed of coursed rubble and has a stone tiled roof.

The main range consists of two storeys and two bays, featuring a central door set in a shallow arched stone chamfered architrave with a hoodmould. On either side of the door are stone mullioned windows with ovolo moulding. To the right, there is a coped gabled wing that includes a staircase projection at the angle. Newer additions against the end wall incorporate the earlier date stone.

At the rear of the house, there are four renewed windows on the ground floor, while above, one window has a plain chamfered stone surround and another has ovolo moulding. The later date stone is also on the rear wall, accompanied by a sundial to the right. The west gable shows evidence of a roof heightening, possibly from 1694, and is buttressed at ground floor level. The first-floor window features a hoodmould with dropped ends and remnants of ovolo moulded mullions. In the attic, a chamfered hoodmould with dropped ends has been altered by a newer window, and below it is a length of sill course. The house has coped gables and features gable and axial stacks. Inside, there are two inglenooks and a domed bread oven next to one of them.
