Description

Townsend House is a house that was formerly several cottages, featuring a cross wing that runs parallel to the street and a main range extending to the rear. The front elevation is dated 1622, which likely dates the rear range as well. The building is constructed of coursed rubble and has two storeys. The street front consists of two bays, with a 2-light ovolo moulded mullioned window on each floor to the left. There is also a two-storey canted bay window with a coped gable above, which is supported by ornately moulded kneelers and contains three mullioned lights on each floor. The apex of the gable displays the date along with the initials WS and WP. The roof is stone tiled, and the left gable is coped. A stone base supports a brick stack on the right side.

The rear wing is also two storeys high and features a blocked doorway in the angle, which has a chamfered timber lintel and is now a window. There is a blocked stone window and a 2-light window with a hollow chamfered surround that was formerly mullioned and has a hoodmould. The lower end has a new porch and windows, along with brick stacks on the right gable and behind the doorway. The rear of the house faces a farmyard and includes 1½ stone mullioned windows with ovolo moulding. Additionally, a single-storey stable or byre extends along the street, built of coursed rubble with a Welsh slate roof.
