Description
The Windmill is a former windmill built around 1830 to 1840. It is constructed from coursed, squared ironstone rubble and features a domed cap that is clad in 20th-century aluminium, topped with an original copper ball finial. The windmill has a circular plan and stands approximately 60 feet tall, comprising six storeys with an additional storey in the cap. It has centre-pivoting 20-pane casement windows facing the cardinal directions, with fewer windows on the north side. There is a stable door at the base, a door on the first floor, and a blocked door on the fourth floor. The windmill does not have sails.
Inside, it retains a virtually complete set of machinery, including a dressing plant, four sets of grindstones (three French and one from the Peak district), with one of the French sets being underdriven. It also contains a very rare Wegmann Porcelain Roller Mill from around 1880. The windmill ceased operating around 1922, and its sails and fantail were removed in the 1930s. It is said to be the tallest stone windmill in the country.
