Description

The lychgate, north gate, west gate, and walls at the churchyard of St. Mary date from around 1850 and are likely designed by W. Butterfield. They are constructed from coursed squared rubble ironstone with limestone dressings and coping. The lychgate features a wooden open work structure with a slate roof. The walls, which are partly retaining and supported by buttresses, enclose all four sides of the churchyard. The rubble stone is striped with dressed stone and topped with coping.

The eastern lychgate has a half hipped roof and a gable facing, supported on open work and a high stone plinth. Four steps lead up to a landing, from which five additional steps ascend to the churchyard. There is a pair of wooden gates on the landing, with wrought iron spearhead finials alternating with simple wooden ones. The north gate is made of stone and features a Gothic arch with sloping sides and a flat top, flanked by two buttresses. Inside the stone-coped side walls, five stone steps lead to a landing, where four more steps ascend to the churchyard. This landing also has a pair of gates similar to those on the lychgate. The small west gate has a Gothic arched doorway with a stone surround and a wooden door.
