Description

Chantry Cottage is a 17th-century house located in Whitwell. It is constructed of stone with a thatched roof and stone end stacks, and originally comprised two main units. The house is a single storey with an attic, and has a two-window front elevation. It features a range of two-light stone mullion windows with leaded lights. A plank door is positioned centrally to the left, and a doorway has been blocked on the right side. Three eyebrow dormers, each with two lights, are situated over the main roof. The right end of the building has a single-light window above two-light casements, and a two-light casement on the end of a rear outshut with a pantile roof. A single-storey extension is located on the left end.

Inside, the cottage retains chamfered bridging beams and an open fireplace with a bressumer. There is also a 19th-century fireplace housing a cast-iron grate, a timber-framed partition wall, and visible roof collars. The roof is otherwise plastered.

The house forms a group with the nearby Church of St. Michael and survives in relatively good condition.
