Description

A range of three cottages dating to circa 1858, designed by William Butterfield for Viscount Downe. The cottages are constructed of red brick, with decorative banding in blue-black brick, and have a half-hipped plain tile roof, with some renewal, and three ridge stacks and one rebuilt rear stack. The layout is in an L shape, with a projecting wing at the rear on the left.

The cottages are one-and-a-half storeys high. Number 3, on the left, has a gabled porch with a plank door, an 8/8 sash window to the left, and a tripartite 2/2: 6/6: 2/2 sash window to the right, with an 8/8 sash half-hipped dormer window above. A decorative wide band runs along the first floor in a zig-zag pattern. The entire front of Number 1, on the right, is obscured by a 20th-century two-storey extension. Number 5, within the rear wing, features a three-light casement window with an 8/8 sash, a half-hipped dormer window above, a hip stair projection to the right with a single-light window, and a door. At the end of the wing is a three-light casement with an 8/8 sash above. Mostly cambered lintels are present throughout. The cottages are included on the list for their group value.
