Description
Nos. 3 and 5 Market Street are shops and offices built around 1870, with alterations made in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick with painted ashlar dressings and features a slate mansard roof with coped gables, a central ridge, and two gable stacks. It stands four storeys high, plus attics, and has a symmetrical front with four main windows and a narrow entrance bay to the right. The windows are elaborately ornamented, with margin light and plain sashes. The ground floor has two late 20th-century shopfronts. Above, there are round-arched windows with rusticated surrounds, hood moulds, and keystones. Higher up, segment-arched windows with shafts and keystones are complemented by cast-iron balconies on stone brackets. The uppermost section features round cornered windows set on a sill band, with smaller windows in the same style on the right side of each floor. The cornice is decorated with paired brackets and shell moulding, and includes an iron guard rail. The attics contain four shallow gabled dormers with round-arched windows.
