Description
Columns Cave, adjoining No. 14A to the east, is a man-made ornamental cave dating from around 1870, created for Alderman Thomas Herbert. The cave is rectangular, measuring approximately 13 meters by 7 meters and standing 3 meters high, with an open west end. Its roof is supported by three rows of six square rock columns, each featuring relief panels and capitals, although one column has been replaced with brick. The walls are accented by similar half-columns, with bas relief figures and crucifixes positioned between them. This cave is located beneath Park Terrace, while an adjoining cave to the east was filled in during 1976. These caves, along with others in the vicinity, were designed as garden features for Herbert's house in the Ropewalk, which is not included in this listing. The buildings above the cave do not hold special interest.
