Description

Numbers 196 and 198 on Mansfield Road are two houses dating from around 1850, now used as a reading room and offices. The buildings are finished in stucco and topped with a slate roof featuring a central brick ridge stack. They have a plinth and a renewed wooden eaves cornice. The houses rise three storeys and have a four-window range. Most of the windows are original glazing bar sashes with moulded surrounds. In the center, there are two windows on each floor, although the ground floor windows have been altered. The side bays are marked by pilasters beneath open pediments and feature moulded doorcases with cornices and margin glazed doors. Above these doors, there is a margin light round-arched window on each floor.
