Description

Camellia House, located 100 meters south-west of Wollaton Hall, is a former conservatory built in 1823 by Sir Jeffry Wyatville. It features a cast-iron structure with fully glazed walls and roofs, complemented by brick rear walls that are rendered. The building is single-storey with a polygonal plan and consists of 10 bays. The fully glazed walls are divided by cast-iron Doric columns topped with urns, and there is a cornice with breaks. The east end wall is rendered and includes a window in a round-arched recess under a pediment, while the north end has cast-iron double doors and a parapet.

Inside, the space is divided by paths flanked by slender cast-iron columns with lotus-leaf capitals, and above the paths are sheet iron segmental vaults. The rest of the roof is hipped. At the rear, there is a recess with a glazed half-dome, flanked by smaller niches and freestanding Classical sculptures, with two similar figures at the south end and one at the north. This building is an early example of a camellia house and showcases iron and glass construction, reflecting the introduction of the camellia to Europe around 1790.
