Description

Alexandra House is a former constitutional club that has been converted into a bar. It was built in 1897 by AR Calvert of Nottingham and is designed in the Flemish Renaissance Revival style. The building features ashlar stonework with a rock-faced basement and ashlar dressings, topped by a very steep pitched plain tile roof with two coped brick gable stacks.

The exterior has a symmetrical facade with an arcaded ground floor, a balustraded first floor balcony, and a prominent gable adorned with volutes. The structure consists of three storeys plus a basement and attics, with a four-window range. The basement includes two openings with window guards and a double door on the right. The ground floor has three reglazed round-arched windows with a renewed cast-iron balcony. To the left, there is a stone doorcase with a fanlight.

The upper floors are separated by pilasters. The first floor features a central bow window with three lights, supported by columns and topped with a cornice and solid balustrade with a crest. On either side are recessed French windows with overlights, and there is a full-width cast-iron balcony railing. The uppermost section has four plain sash windows with broken pediments, and the attic gable includes a lintel band, finials, and a segmental pediment, along with two cross mullioned windows featuring round-arched tympana and a central roundel above.

Inside, the entrance hall has round arches supported by granite columns or pilasters, with half-glazed doors that include fanlights and sidelights. The stairwell features a stone open well stair and a bow-fronted stone balcony on the first landing, with a cross beam ceiling that includes a skylight. The ground floor has a coved ceiling decorated with a foliage border.
