Description
22 and 24 Market Street are shops and offices built around 1870, with alterations made in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick with stucco dressings and features a slate roof in an Italianate style. It has a bracketed eaves cornice and stands three storeys high, plus attics, with a three-window range. The upper floors retain original plain sash windows. The central entrance has a renewed wooden doorcase, flanked by replica shopfronts that include plate glass windows and a fascia cornice supported by brackets. On the first floor, there is a round-arched window with a segmental pediment on brackets, and on each side, there are canted wooden bay windows with three lights and similar pediments. Above this, a round-arched window is flanked by paired windows, all featuring moulded surrounds and a bracketed sill band. The attic has similar window designs with smaller flat-headed windows. Inside, there is one ground floor room that includes a moulded cornice.
