Description

Plumptre Hospital, along with its attached wall and railings, consists of almshouses and a master's house, built in 1823 by Edward Staveley, the Surveyor to the Nottingham Corporation. The building was restored in the mid-20th century. It features painted stucco with hipped slate roofs, two octagonal and four lozenge-shaped rendered stacks, a plinth, and a moulded eaves cornice. All openings have label moulds. The structure is two storeys high with a five-window range. The windows are cast-iron casements with leaded panes and stained glass.

The central entrance bay projects and has an inscribed panel on the first floor, above which is a roundel displaying a coat of arms and a Latin motto. Below this is a triple chamfered four-centred arched doorway with a traceried panelled door. On either side of the entrance, there are two three-light windows on each floor. To the right, there is a short link to the master's house, which is positioned at right angles to the main block. The front of the master's house features a single large three-light window on each floor, with a central window flanked by smaller windows. Below, there is an off-centre half-glazed door, with a three-light window to the left and a plain sash and a two-light window to the right.

Outside, there is a short section of the original boundary wall, made of stucco with wrought-iron railings and a square pier. The rear of the main block has a central recess between projecting wings, featuring a central inscribed tablet and regular fenestration.
