Description
This is a house with an attached gateway, built around 1875 by T.C. Hine of Nottingham. It is constructed from brick, which is now roughcast and painted, with stucco dressings and hipped slate roofs. Four side wall and two ridge stacks are visible.
The exterior features a blue brick plinth, a ground floor impost band, a moulded first floor band and sill band, and a coved cornice. Most of the windows are original plain sashes. The house is two storeys plus attics, with a three-bay by three-bay layout. The front entrance has a central projecting porch with a round-arched doorway and fanlight, flanked by Ionic pilasters and topped by an entablature. There are round-arched windows on each side, and further windows above, flanked by external stacks. Single, flat-headed windows are located in the corniced chimney stacks. The garden front has a recessed centre with a round-headed window below and a plain sash above. A wing to the right has a pair of round-headed sashes below and a pair of plain sashes above. To the left is a canted bay window with three sashes rising through three floors to form a large octagonal cupola. Ground floor windows are round-headed. Upper floor sashes are plain, with the second-floor sashes smaller. The cupola features a sham balcony and round-headed openings, two of which are blocked, and is divided by Ionic pilasters. The south front includes an external stack flanked by single round-headed sashes, with a slightly projecting bay containing a C20 conservatory on the ground floor and a triple sash above. A moulded gable with a smaller tripartite sash is also present.
The interior retains many original features, including a central staircase hall with inlaid wooden marquetry flooring and dado panelling. A good quality single-flight return staircase has a pierced balustrade, and the landing features a round-arched arcade with coloured marble columns and moulded capitals. Ground floor rooms are reportedly fitted with dado panelling, fireplaces, and contemporary plaster ceilings. The bathroom is said to contain an early bath with a combined shower fitting.
To the left of the house is a gateway with square columns, a chamfered plinth and cornice caps, topped with ball finials. There are renewed wrought-iron gates, and short lengths of coped wall on each side. The attached gateway shows stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops.
