Description

The Former Church of St Mark, built between 1869 and 1872 and designed by architect Ewan Christian, is a large Gothic-style church. It is constructed from purple granite rubble with stone dressings and has slate roofs. The church features a nave and chancel combined into one space with an apsidal end, along with north and south aisles and north transepts. A prominent southeast tower is topped with a stone spire, pinnacles, and a round stair turret. The south aisle is distinguished by a series of staggered gables, and there are clerestory lancets with plate tracery.

Inside, the church has three wide bays supported by circular piers made of polished granite, with arches crafted from red and buff stone. The walls are made of brick, and the interior includes a shafted clerestory and a timber wagon roof. The west end was completed in 1903 by Shearman. Notable stained glass windows were created by Henry Holiday in 1893 and Kempe in 1895.
