Description

The gates and gatepiers at Abbey Park were built in 1882 and designed by James Tait. They are made of red brick with ashlar dressings, featuring wrought iron railings and gates. The central gatepier is square with ashlar chamfered corners and a moulded ashlar plinth. Its upper section has a single ogee-headed Gothic canopy with pinnacles on both the road and park sides, topped with blind ashlar battlements and an ornate finial. On either side, there are pairs of wrought iron gates with alternate spear tops and fleur-de-lys. There are also single arched pedestrian gates between square brick gatepiers that have ashlar plinths, quoins, and caps. A moulded segmental linking arch, topped with battlements, connects the gatepiers, which are adorned with late 20th-century iron lamps. Low brick walls with brick and ashlar chamfered caps and plain wrought iron railings curve in a serpentine shape for approximately 30 meters, ending at square brick piers with moulded ashlar caps and double battlements. These gates and railings serve as the main entrance to Abbey Park, which was designed by Barron & Son following a competition in 1870 and opened in 1882.
