Description
West Lodge at the main entrance to Abbey Park is a lodge built in 1882, designed by James Tait. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and features timber-framing. The roof is hipped and covered with plain tiles, and there are two reduced brick stacks.
The lodge is a single storey with attics. The park-facing side has a projecting square bay window on the left, which has a chamfered plinth and a 4-light transom and mullion window, along with single-light side windows. Above this is a single 5-light mullion window topped with ashlar battlements. To the right, there is a lean-to bell canopy supported by stone corbels. There is also a single 3-light mullion window and a moulded ashlar entrance on this side.
On the south-east front, there is a projecting gabled wing to the right featuring a 3-light transom and mullion window, and above it, a jettied timber-framed upper floor with a 5-light canted oriel window. To the left, there is another moulded ashlar entrance leading to a corner porch with a set-back segment-arched doorway that has a panelled door. The street front has an additional square bay window topped with battlements. The interior has not been inspected.
