Description

The following building shall be added to the list;

LEICESTER BELGRAVE GATE SK 5804 NE (east side) 1/10041 Kingstone Store II Store. 1937. By Raymond McGrath for Sir Charles Keene. Steel-framed with reinforced concrete front and brick rear walls. Flat roof. L plan, wing to rear. 3 storeys of continuous curtain wall glazing with pink Vitrolite glass between storeys held in place by copper strips. Projecting canopy over ground floor. Rear rendered late C20. INTERIOR. Retains open plan with ceilings supported on square piers and round to front. Open-well staircase from ground to 2nd floor. Original offices removed. Occasional archways to the adjoining buildings either side, which are now part of the store but which are not of special architectural interest. This is one of the few surviving works by McGrath and the front is only the 2nd known example of curtain walling in the UK and the first without intervening mullions. McGrath was the joint author of 'Glass in Architecture and Decoration' published in 1937 and his house for the same client in Gaulby, Leics., is included in the list for that parish.
