Description

Nos 78 and 80 Rutland Street are a pair of buildings dating from 1923, designed by Fosbrooke and Bedingfield of Leicester. They were constructed as a leather warehouse for the Pfister and Vogal Company, and are believed to be a replica of the firm's headquarters in Philadelphia. The buildings are of brick construction with stone dressings, incorporating some Gothic detailing. They are a tall, four-storey, three-bay structure. The left and right sections project, featuring large, three-storey windows with transoms and mullions and continuous shafts. A vehicle entrance is located on the ground floor to the right. The ground floor to the left has a moulded, ogee arched doorway with carved foliage decoration, flanked by round-headed lights and circular panels above. A recessed section in the centre features a tall, narrow, metal-frame canted bay window extending over three storeys, ornamented with lead panels, and an ogee shaped roof with a tapered flagpole.
