Description

The City Rooms, built in 1792 by architect J. Johnson of Leicester, is a fine classical building constructed in ashlar. It has two storeys and a basement, featuring three large windows with three lights each, separated by Greek Ionic columns. The windows have semi-circular heads with glazed tympana, although modern sashes with glazing bars have replaced the original ones. The ground floor has four windows with flat arches and a rusticated finish. Above, there is a plain frieze and a modillion cornice topped by a small parapet that rises to a central panel. A projecting porch supported by two pairs of Tuscan columns features a heavy entablature. Flanking the central window are two niches with a small frieze and cornice, each containing figures of female musicians. Above these niches are small inset bas-reliefs of dancing figures, created by J.C.F. Rossi and J. Bingley. The building has a slate roof with gabled ends and includes basement area railings.

Inside, there is a fine staircase and a large first-floor room that spans the entire front of the building. This room features a shallow tunnel-vault and stucco decoration, with paintings by R. R. Reinagle. The City Rooms, along with No 10 and No 14 Knight and Garter Public House, form a group, as do The City Rooms and Extension with 2-4 Market Place South.
