Description
Nos 7 and 9 Market Place is a building that likely dates back to the early 17th century. It has been refaced and stuccoed, featuring a timber-frame structure. The building stands three storeys high with an attic. The east front has two gables with stone coping, and the first and second floors each have three sash windows without glazing bars. There are two smaller attic windows in the gables that do have glazing bars.
The building boasts a fine late 19th-century shop front, which includes elliptical arch windows adorned with stuccoed relief foliage surrounds, a central elliptical arch doorway, and pilasters with console brackets that support a cornice. The right-hand return features the same shop front style, with irregular window arrangements above and one and a half gables.
Adjoining to the west is a late 19th-century section built of red bricks, which is four storeys tall and has a single Dutch gable. The first and second floors have wooden bay windows set in recesses with a canopy above, while the third floor features a three-light window with a segmental pediment over the central light. The ground floor of this section also has a contemporary shop front with a heavy cornice and railings above.
Nos 1 to 9 (odd) and No 10 Hotel Street form a group.
