Description
Railway Terrace, consisting of numbers 2 to 15, is a group of railway workers’ accommodation built in 1842. Designed by Francis Thompson, it comprises two terraces of two-storey red-brick houses, each with a cellar. The houses have an ashlar plinth, a stone band at the first floor level, and a stone-coped parapet. Gable ends are visible, and the roofs are slate-covered with brick chimney stacks featuring decorative treatment to the cornices. Each terrace has seven windows at numbers 2 and 3, sharing a central ground-floor passage, and two windows at each of numbers 4 to 15. Windows have stuccoed sills and are set within gauged brick arches, with sash windows; some retain glazing bars. Stone doorcases with cornices, friezes incorporating triglyphs, and stone jambs provide access, alongside stone steps, to four-panelled doors with fanlights. Numbers 2 and 3 share a central doorcase, while the remaining houses have paired doors. A wrought iron bracket is affixed to the corner of the first floor at number 15.
