Description

The Hippodrome Theatre, now known as Walker's Bingo Club, is a variety theatre built in 1914 by Marshall and Tweedy, with some minor alterations made in the late 20th century. The building is constructed of red brick, rendered and painted below the canopy level, with terracotta dressings and a Welsh slate roof. It has a rectangular shape with the main entrance located at the north-east corner, featuring two pairs of double doors flanked by double pilasters.

The east elevation includes advanced corner bays on either side of central recessed bays, with a secondary entrance set back at the south end. The advanced bays have recessed brickwork bands at the corners, while the recessed bays feature advanced brick panels with keyed oculi above two-light cross windows. The original continuous canopy is now obscured by later cladding.

The north elevation consists of ten bays, with the first bay containing a keyed Diocletian window and the next five featuring keyed oculi. The interiors are largely intact, although the stalls were remodeled in the late 20th century. Two curved balconies above provide tiered seating for the circle and upper circle. The stage has a rectangular proscenium topped with a giant segmental pediment motif that frames a garland. Single boxes at circle level are flanked by giant pilasters that support serpentine pediments. The plasterwork is richly decorated on the balcony fronts, proscenium, and ceiling, which features a circular moulding set within a square frame. The orchestra pit, scenery grid, and projection room remain, along with the ceiling plasterwork in the foyer, although this is concealed beneath a lower, later ceiling.

The Hippodrome Theatre is a complete early 20th-century variety theatre that marks a significant stage in the evolution of building types that became the dominant design for cinema construction in the late 1920s.
