Description
The former Derby Education Department Offices, dated 1893, is a two-storey building designed in a Renaissance style. The facade is made of ashlar and features pilasters that are rusticated on the ground floor and Corinthianesque above. It has nine windows set in moulded architraves, each with pilasters and voluted keyblocks. The central section of the facade slightly projects and contains three windows, a central entablature, and a carved panel displaying the Borough coat of arms. This is topped by a semi-circular shell pediment and a truncated pyramidal roof with iron brattishing.
A projecting central portico has pilaster sides, a frieze, a pediment, and a semi-circular arched doorway adorned with an animal-mask keyblock and a six-panelled divided door. The first floor features a dentilled cornice and a modillion eaves cornice, with the roof covered in slates. Inside, a large room on the right side of the first storey boasts a good coved ceiling with a carved beam and drop-finials.
