Description
No 10 Wardwick, including Nos 1 to 10 of Haymarket Arcade, dates from 1883 and is built in ashlar stone. It is designed in the Renaissance style and consists of three storeys with nine windows featuring semi-circular arched heads, figure-head keyblocks, and carved spandrels. The bays are defined by pilasters that are rusticated on the ground and first storeys, and coupled at the second storey with Corinthianesque capitals. There are cornices at the first and second floors. The doorway, located near the centre, has a semi-circular arched head, Corinthianesque pilasters, a voluted keyblock, steps leading up, and a recessed part-glazed divided door with a screen. The eaves cornice features an egg-and-dart frieze and is topped by a balustrade with an entablature inscribed with the date of construction. Modern shop fronts have been inserted. This building, along with Nos 6, 8, and 10, and the gates on the right-hand side of the Central Library, forms a group with No 1 Strand.
