Description
Nos 2 to 40 (even) The Strand, including the entrance to the Strand Arcade, is a continuous range of buildings constructed in 1881 in a Neo-classical style. The structure is made of ashlar and consists of three and four storeys. It features a variety of sash windows without glazing bars, which are set in moulded architraves with cornices on consoles. A continuous modillion cornice runs along the first floor, and another at the third floor forms the eaves cornice of the three-storey section of the range.
Pilasters rise over the first and second storeys at alternate bays. There are three doorways and the entrance to the Strand Arcade, located between Nos 28 and 30, which has pilasters on either side, semi-circular arched heads with foliated keyblocks, elaborately carved spandrels, and open balustrades. A continuous cornice is present at the first floor. No 2 features a doorway set on a splay to the return side in a rusticated surround, along with arcaded windows at the front. The doorways generally have 12-panelled divided doors, and there is a moulded eaves cornice topped with open balustrading. Modern shop fronts have been inserted, but the entrance to the Strand Arcade is included as part of the facade.
Nos 2 to 40 (even) including the entrance to the Strand Arcade form a group with Nos 17 to 21 (odd) and No 25 St James's Street.
