Description

The Homestead, located on Sitwell Street, Spondon, is a substantial brick house dating to 1740, as indicated by a rainwater head bearing the initials IA. The design is reminiscent of the work of Francis Smith of Warwick. Constructed of red brick with stone dressings, the house is three storeys high and features a symmetrical facade with a pattern of 2+1+2 sash windows, largely set within cased frames. The windows are topped with flat arches of rubbed brick, incorporating fluted stone keyblocks. Angle quoins define the corners of the building. A central flight of eight moulded stone steps leads up to the front door, flanked by fine iron railings. The entrance has a Venetian style design, incorporating Doric columns and a triglyph frieze, with side lights and a central glazed door surmounted by a round-headed fanlight. A notable feature is the first-floor central window, which is flanked by fluted Ionic pilasters, a pulvinated frieze, a round head, and prominent sill brackets. The top-storey window is round-headed with a simple architrave. The building is finished with a stone cornice and a brick parapet topped with stone capping and a central open pediment.

The rear elevation has six windows within cased frames. A Venetian style stair window is visible, along with a brick parapet and a square porch at ground floor level. A full-height closet extension is located on the left-hand side, with a single sash window on each storey and a matching parapet. The entrance piers are rusticated ashlar with acorn finials.

The interior of the house retains a good staircase and contemporary panelling in the principal rooms.
