Description
This is a long terrace of railway workers' accommodation cottages, built in 1842. Designed by the architect Francis Thompson, it extends from numbers 13 to 61 on the east side of Calvert Street. The terrace is two storeys high and constructed of red brick with cellars beneath. It features an ashlar plinth that has been cut down below the doorways to create a stone step. The cottages have paired doorways, and number 13 has an unusual concave end wall along with a shop front that includes a cornice and pilasters. The roofs are slate-covered with brick chimneys featuring cornices. Each cottage generally has one window, with sash windows incorporating glazing bars and stuccoed sills. Doorways and windows are framed by gauged red-brick arches.
