Description
The lodge to Woolley Hall, including the surrounding walling, piers, gate piers, and gates, was built around 1820 by Jeffry Wyatt for Godfrey Wentworth Wentworth of Woolley Hall. The structure features ashlar and cast-iron materials. It has tall gate piers adorned with Doric corner pilasters, a frieze, cornice, and a blocking course. There are lower ornamental round-arched pedestrian gateways flanked by curved quadrant walls with panelled ashlar piers, although only the piers on the right side remain. The site includes ornamental cast-iron carriage and pedestrian gates. Behind the southern quadrant is a small lodge, which is now in ruins, but retains a notable doorway with an architrave, apron, and decorative features, including three panels with a raised shield at the center. The flanking ashlar piers have recessed panels.
Inside the lodge, there are four rooms arranged along the curve of the outer wall, with some standing walls and remnants of two fireplaces. A linking passage features remains of a brick barrel vault. The original drawing of the lodge is illustrated in G. Markham's book, "Woolley Hall, The Historical Development of a Country House," published in 1979.
